RCOMSDEP Engages Amantena Community on Responsible Mining

The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (RCOMSDEP) has engaged the youth and chiefs of Amantena in the Asante Akim North Municipal to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices. The event brought together key stakeholders to educate the community on how to benefit from their natural resources while reducing environmental and social impacts.

The National Coordinator, Hon. Ing. Frank Asare Pedro, noted in his address that mining, when carried out responsibly, can create jobs, generate revenue, and support economic growth. He warned, however, that irresponsible mining can cause environmental destruction, health risks, and social conflicts.

Hon. Ing. Pedro also used the platform to educate the community on the importance of formalizing their mining activities. He encouraged miners to obtain the required permits and follow environmental regulations. He emphasized the need to prioritize environmental protection, safety, and social responsibility, while acknowledging the roles of the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in enforcing mining laws.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Sarah Amoakoaa, praised the initiative and reassured the community of the Assembly’s commitment to promoting responsible mining. She urged residents to work together to ensure that the benefits of mining are shared fairly and that the environment is preserved for future generations.

Sub-chiefs who attended the engagement expressed their appreciation to RCOMSDEP and pledged their support. They stressed the need for the youth to understand sustainable mining practices and to take responsibility for managing their natural resources properly.

Representatives from the Konongo Minerals Commission District Office and the EPA also educated participants on mining regulations, the advantages of formalization, and the consequences of operating without compliance.

The interactive session allowed community members to voice their concerns and seek clarification. The RCOMSDEP team addressed issues faced by small-scale miners and explained the types of support available to miners who choose to formalize their operations.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from the Amantena community to adopt responsible and sustainable mining practices. RCOMSDEP also reaffirmed its pledge to continue supporting the community in their mining activities.
