Stakeholders Dialogue on Responsible Cooperative Mining Held for Newmont Ahafo South Host Communities

As part of an official visit to the Ahafo Region, a Stakeholders Dialogue on Responsible Cooperative Mining was held today at Goaso. The meeting brought together representatives from Newmont Ghana Mining Company, National Officials of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Program (rCOMSDEP), Traditional Rulers (Nananom) from various traditional councils in the region, as well as officials from the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Water Resources Commission, small-scale miners, and youth leaders from mining communities.

The rCOMSDEP delegation was led by the National Coordinator, Ing. Frank Asare Pedro (Eqs), along with Mr. George Dadzie Jnr, Deputy Coordinator in charge of Operations; Mr. Abubakar Abdul-Malik, Deputy Director of Cooperatives; and Mr. Kalayi Joseph Kwabena, Protocol Officer.

In his remarks, Ing. Pedro outlined the main objectives, mission, and key pillars of rCOMSDEP. He emphasized the importance of responsible mining practices and urged small-scale miners to avoid illegal mining activities that harm the environment and communities.

Speaking on behalf of Newmont Ahafo South, the Principal Director for Sustainability Projects, Mrs. Charllot Tay Senyo, announced that Newmont is willing to release portions of its concession to communities for cooperative mining initiatives. She, however, cautioned that all interested groups must strictly follow the required procedures and regulations to ensure responsible and sustainable mining.

Officials from the regulatory agencies also took the opportunity to educate participants—particularly the miners and youth leaders—on the necessary guidelines and measures for responsible mining operations.

The meeting was highly interactive and well-received. Stakeholders expressed their appreciation for the initiative and pledged their commitment to promoting responsible cooperative mining in the Ahafo South area.

They also looked forward to the successful implementation of the Responsible Cooperative Mining Program in their communities.
